Hope your October has got off to a flying start and you’re loving the changing colours of the season, the gorgeous warm rich hues of colour that nature is bringing our way. It’s also time to turn your attention to packing away some (not all) of your summer wardrobe and think about prepping for autumn/winter.
Every year I get asked about the key pieces of the season, and what to buy to keep up-to-date. The answer is never clear cut, as this will depend on your colouring, body shape, lifestyle, etc. So what may be a key piece for you may not be a key piece for someone else. Having said that, there are certain items my clients return to again and again. Here are some suggestions for 12 pieces you may wish to consider for your wardrobe this autumn/winter. Other items, such as a blazer or a hoodie, may be essential for you too.
I’m working with Ambrose Wilson, a UK-based company, on a paid-partnership basis for three months. I’ve picked items from their collection that won’t break the bank this winter. Some of us may be a little bit mindful about expenditure this winter as the cost of living rises.
You may have similar items in your wardrobe which you can dust down and wear again. Otherwise, if you like the pieces I’ve selected, then I’ve also added the link to buy these items. Ambrose Wilson clothes are generally true to size, with most items available from UK size 10 to 30. I’m 5ft 4″, so you’ll get a rough idea of hemlines from the photos.
1. Cord Midi Dress
This baby cord tiered dress is soft and sumptuous and I would describe the colour as mulberry/damson. It’s got a half placket button detail and is similar to a buffet dress in shape, though I have added a belt to cinch in the waist and give a bit more shape. It can be accessorised with shoes, boots or trainers for a more casual look. There are deep side pockets and the long sleeves make this the perfect everyday dress. You can layer underneath as well as over for a toasty warm outfit.
Length of dress: 48 Inches / 122 cm
Machine Wash at 30 degrees
2. Brown knee high boots
You’ve got to trust me on this one … brown knee high boots seem to go with every possible colour combo. These are true to size and I absolutely love them. I wore them last year throughout winter.
These are elegant boots crafted from nubuck and have a heel height of 5cm. Standard D width fitting and available in black too.
3. Camel Trench Wool Blend Coat
This coat is chunky therefore warm! Any neutral-coloured coat is the perfect addition to your autumn/winter wardrobe this season. Featuring a tie waist, button fastening and front pockets. I’ve paired it with a dress and boots, but you can throw it over your favourite jeans with trainers for a sophisticated daytime look, or over a skirt or dress with heels for a dressed-up day-to-evening look.
Length: 122 cm / 48 inches
Dry clean only
4. Cross body bag
Practical yet stylish, this camera bag is the perfect multi-functioning bag. Featuring a detachable strap, the bag can be styled on your shoulder/across the body/as a clutch. Your handbag essentials will be safe as the bag features a tassle zip as well as an inner zipped pocket. This style is available in two colours, Black and Olive.
25.5 x 19 x 7.5 cm
5. Knitted dress
This is a roll neck dress but you could also opt for a crew neck if you don’t like high necklines. As it’s knitted, there’s lots of stretch so it’s comfortable to wear. Add a vest underneath or, as I’ve done here, a gilet
Length: 41 Inches / 104 cm
Machine wash at 30 degrees
This diamond-quilted gilet adds texture and warmth to your wardrobe as we transition into colder months. Featuring the in-trend diamond-pattern quilting, front pockets and an adjustable waist. This gilet makes a perfect layer to throw on over a jumper and jeans, or over a skirt or dress.
Length: 104 cm / 41inches
Machine wash at 30 degrees.
7. Striped top/jumper
Stripes will never go out of fashion and there’s so much choice so choose a colour, style and scale of stripe that flatters your body shape. This one has a high neck. I’ve styled it with jeans and ankle boots, but I would wear this with a skirt or over a dress too.
Length: 29 inches / 74 cm
Machine washable at 30 degrees
52% Viscose. 28% Polyester. 20% Polyamide.
The range of jeans is vast so you are really spoilt for choice. I love the fact that there’s elastane in all the styles for ease of movement and comfort.
9. Animal print dress
This is one of Ambrose Wilson’s best-selling shapes. It’s a V neck jersey dress featuring long sleeves and a clean shape designed to skim the body. This dress is perfect for any occasion. The knitted vest adds warmth and texture to the outfit, but I also wear the dress on its own or with a belt for a bit more shape.
Length: 50 inches / 127 cm
97% Polyester. 3% Elastane.
10. Knitted vest
My most-worn item last winter and I have a few variations of these.
This roll neck vest is knitted in a relaxed silhouette with tie sides to adjust to your shape. The cable-knit design adds interest to the outfit and you can slip it over a dress, shirt or another jumper for a layered look and extra warmth.
Length: 25 inches / 64cm
11. Quilted coat
These puffa coats are a winter stalwart. Choose a colour and style that works for you. You might need a hood with yours.
Featuring a removable padded inner to keep you extra warm, pockets and a cosy padded neck.
Length: 35 inches / 89cm
12. Ankle boots
Shown above with the striped jumper and jeans, these ankle chelsea boots make a change to wearing knee high boots and there’s less of an issue with calf width fitting. They feature a soft, leather-look PU upper and elastic back for easy wear. Pair with jeans or trousers and with dresses in those transitional months. Size down by one size.
