When I was invited to ski with Girl Powder Retreats, I was beyond excited. Skiing had been on my bucket list for years, and at 54, I finally had the chance! As a midlife woman—and a woman of colour—venturing into a sport often stereotyped as the domain of the young, affluent, or predominantly white, I wasn’t sure what to expect or if I’d fit in.

 

Inclusivity on the Slopes

I am aware I might not see many other women who look like me on the slopes. But that only reinforced how vital representation is in sports like skiing. We need to break stereotypes and prove that skiing is truly for everyone.

 

Skiing has long been viewed as a sport for the young and affluent, but that narrative is changing. Resorts like Chamonix need to consider being more inclusive by promoting diversity in their marketing and creating welcoming spaces for people from all backgrounds. Ski and tour companies need to do the same.

 

To any woman of colour reading this: skiing isn’t just for certain groups—it’s for you, too. Representation matters, and every time we hit the slopes, we pave the way for others.

 

Packing List for a 5-Day Skiing Trip to France

You might find it helpful to print this list and tick items off as you pack.

(2 days in transit, 3 full days skiing)

Clothing for Skiing

1. Base Layers (Thermal):
   • 3 sets of moisture-wicking tops and leggings (merino wool or synthetic).
2. Mid-Layers:
   • 2-3 fleece jackets or sweaters.
3. Outerwear:
   • Waterproof and insulated ski jacket.
   • Waterproof ski pants.
4. Ski Socks:
   • 3-4 pairs (thick, moisture-wicking).
5. Gloves or Mittens:
   • 1 pair of waterproof, insulated ski gloves/mittens.
   • Optional: glove liners for extra warmth.
6. Neck Gaiter/Scarf:
   • 1-2 (fleece or wool).
7. Headgear:
   • Ski helmet (if not renting).
   • Ski goggles.
   • 1 warm hat/beanie for après-ski and general use.
8. Sports Bras:
   • 2-3 comfortable, moisture-wicking options.

Casual Wear (Travel & Après-Ski)

1. Tops:
   • 2-3 long-sleeve tops.
   • 1-2 lightweight sweaters or cardigans.
2. Bottoms:
   • 2 pairs of comfortable pants (e.g., jeans, leggings).
3. Shoes:
   • 1 pair of waterproof, insulated boots for walking around the resort.
   • 1 pair of comfortable travel shoes.
   • 1 pair of slippers.
4. Outerwear:
   • 1 insulated jacket for evenings.
5. Accessories:
   • Warm gloves (non-ski gloves for casual wear).
   • Extra scarf.
   • Thermal tights for layering under casual outfits.

Nightwear & Underwear

1. Nightwear:
   • 1 set of pajamas.
2. Underwear:
   • 5-6 pairs of underwear.
   • 1-2 camisoles or tank tops (for layering).

Toiletries

1. Travel-size shampoo, conditioner, and body wash.
2. Moisturizer (face and body), cleanser, and toner.
3. Lip balm with SPF.
4. Sunscreen (SPF 30+ for face).
5. Toothbrush and toothpaste.
6. Hairbrush/comb, hair ties, or headbands.
7. Travel-sized deodorant.
8. Medications (if needed) and a small first-aid kit (plasters, Compeed, painkillers, etc.).
9. HRT, sanitary towels, or tampons.
10. Razor and shower cap.
11. Vanity kit, tweezers, and perfume.
12. Eye mask and earplugs.
13. Portable light-up mirror.
14. Makeup.

Ski Gear (if not renting)

1. Skis, boots, and poles.
2. Ski bag for transportation.

Miscellaneous Essentials

1. Sunglasses (for bright conditions).
2. Reusable water bottle.
3. Backpack or ski-specific daypack (for snacks, water, etc.).
4. Small snacks (granola bars, chocolate, etc.).
5. Phone, charger, and power bank.
6. Travel adapter (if needed).
7. Hand warmers and heat patches (optional).
8. Travel pillow (for comfort during transit).
9. Ski lock (to secure skis when taking breaks).
10. Boot dryer or inserts (to dry boots overnight).
11. Reading glasses.

Entertainment & Comfort

1. Book, e-reader, or tablet for downtime.
2. Spotify playlist or podcasts (downloaded for offline listening).
3. Deck of cards or a small travel game.
4. Notebook/journal to document your trip.
5. Headphones.

Practical Items for France

1. Swimsuit (if your accommodation has a spa or hot tub).
2. Laundry bag for dirty clothes.
3. Compact umbrella (in case of rain).
4. Basic French phrases guide (or app).
5. Cash and cards (Euros for small purchases or tips).
